May 1st

Today is May 1st. International Labour Day. All over the world, we give the workforce a day off. But in India the scenario is a little different. We are treated as Labour with absolutely no holiday. MNCs appear closed but employees enter the premises from behind (backdoor entry). The closed front doors are only to tackle the sudden entry of any labour officer. May 1st, marks the historic struggle of working people throughout the world, and is recognized in every country except the United States, Canada, and South Africa. This despite the fact that the holiday began in the 1880s in the United States, with the fight for an eight-hour work day. This is also because almost every company management feels that this is an unneccessary holiday given to these people who are much much better than Labourers. These guys have neither read nor have any regards for the Labour Department Instrutions. The management feels, since we work for the US Clients, we should follow them. I can tell this, because I am from the HR industry. Its OK, but are we not living in India? Had the situation been reveres as in if we had a company in the US would it follow India holidays or forced to also take care of American holidays?

Time to ponder I guess. After all who doesn't want holidays?
